Introduction

This website provides an integrated online version of the Catalogue of European Wind Instruments by E A K Ridley with an appendix of bagpipes by Elizabeth Wells (London, Royal  College of Music, 1982) together with the Addenda volume published in 1998.  For this latter volume, the original entries were drafted by Mr Ridley and worked on by Dr Lance Whitehead, the volume being edited by Elizabeth Wells.  The individual entries appear largely unaltered, though minor adjustments to layout have been made to adapt the text to the online environment. Catalogue entries by Jenny Nex for some 60 instruments acquired by the Museum since 1998 have also been included. 

The design and production of these pages (and the online version of Part 2, the Catalogue of Keyboard Instruments) was funded as part of a grant under the AHRB Project Fund scheme, which also funded the preparation of Part 3, the Catalogue of String Instruments, due for publication in 2005.
