The 8-bar fragment containing the melody and bass lines only, headed: "All[egr]o pomposo" and underneath: "Thème de l'apothéose / final de la Symphonie funèbre et triomphale executer [?] 2 for [image cropped] à Dresde / H Berlioz, Dresde 18 Février 1843 / Ce souvenir la en vaut un autre! n'est-ce-pas?".
This was written on the day after the second and last concert where, amonsgt other works of his, the final two movements were successfully performed.

The 8-bar theme, headed "Thème de l'apothéose de la Symphonie funebre et triomphale H. Berlioz. It was probably written for Madame Friedland in Prague or Breslau in 1846 (see. Memoirs LIV), the wife of a German musician who later raised some money for Berlioz after the disasterous Paris performance of Le damnation de Faust in November 1846. The transcription by Hugh Macdonald is from a photocopy sent by Mrs S.C. Fenderson in December 1964.

The microfilm contains the printed orchestral and vocal parts published in Paris by M. Schlesinger in 1843 but also includes some autograph corrections; lacks cor anglais parts 1-2.

The microfilm was taken from the copy in the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh. In a letter dated 15 Feb. 1845 (CG 941) Berlioz thanked Thalberg a forty thousand times, describing the piece as superb.

In the 1905 article (p. 292) Julien Tiersot (1857-1936) includes the specially written words sung at the performance conducted by Berlioz and Théophile Tilmant at the Exposition de l'Industrie in Paris on 1 August 1844.
