London Richter Concert, 1886

By the turn of the century concerts defined as 'serious' had no such music any more. Here we see a programme done at the Richter Concerts, a series begun in 1876, originally focused each upon classical and contemporary works but by 1910 chiefly upon canonic repertory:

This programme is typical of what had evolved at such concerts: four works, one of them contemporary and British, opened by an overture and closed by a single long work after the interval. We have come a long way from what we saw being performed in the 1780s.
