This memorial exhibition celebrates the life and career of Hugh Bean, CBE, one of the most distinguished British violinists of the twentieth century, and one of the best-loved Professors at the Royal College of Music (1955–1992). This display draws on material from the Centre for Performance History, the RCM Library, and from the collections of Eileen Croxford and Mrs Mary Bean, to whom we are very grateful for the loan of some marvellous images. Our thanks are also due to Dona Lee Croft, David Harpham, Peter Horton, Maureen Smith and Pam Thompson for their help and advice. The original exhibition was displayed in the main foyer of the Royal College of Music on 7-9 July 2004, to coincide with the Memorial Concert given in the Concert Hall on 7 July 2004. Please note that for copyright reasons it is not possible to reproduce all the images displayed in the exhibition, but all the captions have been included, in order to preserve the outline narrative of Hugh Bean's notable career.
